Why Does God Make Us Suffer?

This is my research and understanding as to whether God makes us suffer or not?

Why Does God Make Us Suffer?

December 2023

Just like the instructions to make this bagel are wrong:

  1. Make the doughy part of the bagel

  2. Make the hole

  3. Attach the hole to the doughy part to finally make it.

According to Augustine, evil is merely an absence of goodness, just as the baker doesn't need to make a hole in addition to the dough. Thus, we know evil wasn't made in addition to goodness. Evil is there in everyone but our evil cancels out with our good, although in some people, evil is the absence of good within. Well, how do we know evil and good exist in all?

Many think that people who have done wrong deserve to suffer, and if such people suffer, it's for the best. Thus God makes some suffer because of their deeds.

Although what's unclear is if god is powerful and can change and do everything, why does he make people suffer to change character? Why can't we ensure we are born with optimal character?

Here is another way of thinking about it. Try to imagine what would happen if God were to prevent all suffering. To do this, he would need to constantly intervene to prevent people from inflicting suffering on one another. He would have to prevent criminals from harming their victims; he would have to prevent politicians from making poor policy decisions; he would have to intervene in people's conversations to stop them from offending each other; he would have to prevent young people from choosing the wrong career paths; he would have to prevent people from becoming parents before they were ready; and so on.

But if God were to constantly interfere in people's lives in this intrusive way, our freedom would be hugely curtailed if not completely destroyed. He would be guilty of “cosmic overparenting”.

So, what do you think, does God make us suffer or not?
